We are kicking 2021 off with a bang and our first member of the month… Tom! Tom has always been strong with the barbell. But, over the last few months he has really focused on nutrition and has transformed his body. Now, in addition to his strength on the barbell he can knock out gymnastics and stay consistent on long endurance workouts. Read below to learn more about Tom:
Tell us a little about yourself. Are you a Milwaukee local? If not, where are you from.
No, I grew up in Nebraska and we moved here about 3.5 years ago.
How long have you been a CrossFit 414 member?
I think we joined in January 2018.
What inspired you to start CrossFit?
We were in Indiana and Leah had already started CrossFit. I was still working out on my own but it was so difficult to stay motivated and to follow a program by myself. She got me curious enough to try it and I immediately loved it.
Tell us a little about your fitness journey.
I started lifting weights when I was 12. Since growing up in a small town, high school sports are one of the most important things, I wanted to excel at that. I played football and basketball for 4 years, competed in state powerlifting meets, but eventually tore my ACL. After that I stopped exercising consistently for about 6 years. Then sort of lifted weights on my own until I finally joined CrossFit.
Which movement is your favorite?
Anything with a barbell.
What encourages you to keep coming back?
Beating Leah.
What do you like most about being a member?
I love the community. Most of our friendships here have been made through the gym, and it has been a great support system through this last year while I was laid off and people coming forward with projects for me especially Marcus, Paru & Mac, Sam, and Heather.
Tell us about your nutrition since joining CrossFit 414.
It has improved tremendously in the last year. Leah and I both started following the RP app after being inspired by Mac, and I am at my lowest weight since 2003.
What milestones have you achieved since joining CrossFit 414?
I’ve gotten toes to bar, chest to bar, rope climbs, improved handstand push ups, and double unders.
What do you tell yourself before starting a challenging workout?
Beat Leah.
What is your next fitness goal?
I would really like to improve my mobility so I don’t have anymore leg/knee/hip pain to complain about.
